This one isn’t like his other glittery gloves, which were made for the right hand and adorned with hand-sewn crystals. This left-handed glove, which accompanied Jackson’s fedora and dance moves on Motown’s 25th-anniversary TV special, is a modified, store-bought glove covered with a mesh of rhinestones.

The glove, which Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions called “the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson memorabilia,” will be featured alongside other one-of-a-kind items — such as an early Madonna demo tape and unreleased Jimi Hendrix lyrics — at the Nov. 21 “Music Icons” auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City’s Times Square.

Walter “Clyde” Orange, a founding member of the Commodores, has been holding onto the glove since Jackson gave it to him in 1983.

Orange said he got to know Jackson when the Commodores toured with the Jackson 5 in the 1970s. Orange would always ask the young entertainer for an autograph, but Jackson refused, saying Orange was the more famous of the two. The autograph request became a private joke.

Pilot’s remains returned home after 18 years

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The remains of Navy pilot Michael Scott Speicher returned to his Florida home on Thursday, 18 years after his FA-18 Hornet was shot down on the first night of the 1991 Gulf War.

Speicher’s remains arrived at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station around 3 p.m. About ten minutes later his coffin was rolled off the plane draped with the U.S. flag. It was to remain at the All Saints Chapel on the base overnight.

Speicher’s ex-wife and his children placed roses on his casket before it was loaded into a hearse. Several sailors stood at attention and lined the runway as the hearse passed by.

Vitamin D is the new It vitamin. Not one, not two, but at least five recent studies found that it has wide-ranging benefits, from keeping your bones and heart healthy to reducing the risk of breast and other cancers. Up to half of women, however, don’t get enough of the vitamin. Many experts agree that young women should aim for 800 to 1,000 IUs a day. (An IU, or international unit, is the standard used to measure vitamins like D, A, E.) You can get what you need from a daily supplement or by adding more vitamin D–rich foods like these to your diet.

Chocolate ‘cuts death rate’ in heart attack survivors

Chocolate 'cuts death rate' in heart attack survivors

Heart attack survivors who eat chocolate two or more times per week cut their risk of dying from heart disease about threefold compared to those who never touch the stuff, scientists have reported.

Smaller quantities confer less protection, but are still better than none, according to the study, which appears in the September issue of the Journal of Internal Medicine.

Earlier research had established a strong link between cocoa-based confections and lowered blood pressure or improvement in blood flow.

It had also shown that chocolate cuts the rate of heart-related mortality in healthy older men, along with post-menopausal women.

But the new study, led by Imre Janszky of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, is the first to demonstrate that consuming chocolate can help ward off the grim reaper if one has suffered acute myocardial infarction — otherwise known as a heart attack.

“It was specific to chocolate — we found no benefit to sweets in general,” said Kenneth Mukamal, a researcher at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a co-author of the study.

“It seems that antioxidants in cocoa are a likely candidate” for explaining the live-saving properties, he told AFP in an exchange of e-mails.

Antioxidants are compounds that protect against so-called free radicals, molecules which accumulate in the body over time that can damage cells and are thought to play a role in heart disease, cancer and the aging process.

In the study, Janszky and colleagues tracked 1,169 non-diabetic men and women, 45-to-70 years old, in Stockholm County during the early 1990s from the time they were hospitalised with their first-ever heart attack.

Abbie Cornish: Early Days of Phillippe Romance Were ‘Difficult’

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Actress Abbie Cornish, the star of Jane Campion’s new period picture ‘Bright Star’ and girlfriend of actor Ryan Phillippe, talked to W at great length about her upcoming projects - but was slightly less forthcoming when it came to her personal life. When asked if she spent much time with Phillipe’s two young children with Reese Witherspoon, Cornish offered only: “Yes, of course” - and had even less to say on the topic of her possible engagement to the actor (simply “No”).

Cornish, who was working with Phillippe at the time of his separation from Witherspoon, was widely assumed to be the cause of their split. In the interview, Cornish describes enduring that situation and makes us believe a historical romance based on John Keats’ life might actually appeal to a mainstream audience. Highlights are below, and you can check out the full interview here.

On Los Angeles: “I guess I was lucky because it was love that brought me here, not work. I think the city feels and looks a little bit different because of that.”

On press attention at the start of her relationship: “It was a really difficult time for me. It was just this world of tabloid magazines that I’d never been exposed to. In a normal successful career, someone usually learns these things bit by bit. For me, it was like night and day. I woke up one day and there was this whole new thing I had to process and deal with.” (more…)

Digital Cameras

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

The first true digital camera that recorded images as a computerized file was likely the Fuji DS-1P of 1988, which recorded to a 16 MB internal memory card that used a battery to keep the data in memory. This camera was never marketed in the United States, and has not been confirmed to have shipped even in Japan.
The first commercially available digital camera was the 1990 Dycam Model 1; it also sold as the Logitech Fotoman. It used a CCD image sensor, stored pictures digitally, and connected directly to a computer for download.
The marketplace for consumer digital cameras was originally low resolution (either analog or digital) cameras built for utility. In 1997 the first megapixel cameras for consumers were marketed. The first camera that offered the ability to record video clips may have been the Ricoh RDC-1 in 1995.

Carano lifeblood of women’s MMA

Gina Carano has done hundreds of interviews and personal appearances since the day in the spring she announced she’d reached contract terms to fight Christiane “Cyborg” Santos on Saturday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

And in virtually every one of those interviews, Carano can barely finish a sentence without beaming and chuckling a bit.

Santos is, by far, the most dangerous woman she’s ever faced, yet Carano exudes cool. The pressure on her in Saturday’s nationally televised bout is immense. There is no athlete in any sport, male or female, who is more important to the success of that sport than Carano is to women’s mixed martial arts. (more…)

‘America’s Got Talent’ narrows field to 5

LOS ANGELES – A trio of singing siblings, five sisters who tap dance, three tenors from Texas, a husband-and-wife dance team and a man and his dog are advancing to the next round of “America’s Got Talent.”

Voices of Glory, a singing trio from Highland, New York; the Fab Five, dancing sisters from Morgan, Utah; the Texas Tenors of Houston; Paradizo Dance from Brooklyn; and Tony Hoard and his dog Rory from New Castle, Ind., learned Wednesday that they will compete in the show’s semifinals. All are vying for a $1 million prize and the chance to headline a Las Vegas show in October.

Nick Cannon hosts. Judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff preside over the competition and offer advice, but viewers choose who wins the NBC talent show. Fans can vote for their favorites via phone, e-mail and text message, with a limit of 10 votes per phone number or address.

Morgan was disappointed that Hoard and Rory advanced instead of a piano-playing singer from California.

“If Charles DeWayne does not go through tonight, it will be the biggest scandal in the history of ‘America’s Got Talent,’” he said.

Apparently, scandal ensued.

Other contestants advancing to the semifinals earned unanimous praise from the judges. Osbourne called the Fab Five and Rory the dog “brilliant.” Morgan called Paradizo dance “incredible” and lauded the Texas Tenors, saying their performance made him “proud to be American, and I’m not even an American.” Hasselhoff said the Voices of Glory are “fantastic” and “what this show’s about.”

Wednesday’s episode also featured a performance by the band LMFAO and magicians Penn and Teller.
